For the past three days, for about an hour each day, I've been cleaning up an abandoned lot in my neighborhood. It was covered with about ten years worth of trash. Now it's beginning to look quite beautiful, minus all the garbage I hauled out.
Yesterday toward the end of my work there I picked up a large piece of broken pottery, and discovered three baby snakes. They were glistening, pristine, perfect little creatures. Absolutely beautiful. Life, glorious inspiring life is everywhere, even in an abandoned lot no one cares about but me.
I encourage you to adopt some small, neglected corner of the world. Give it some help. Clean it up. Make it beautiful. Give it ongoing care, and lots of love. You too may find something to fill your heart with a little bit of heaven right here on earth. —Firinn

Too many people are signing up for pre-pay events and then not paying. If you're hosting a pre-pay event and someone doesn't pay, don't waste your time begging them to pay to pay you what they were supposed to pay you to begin with. Money saving tips: We canceled our cable service about a year ago. We have now saved $708 in a year, and don't miss the crap on TV at all. I also canceled my land line phone, and got Google Voice, saving another $50 per month. Google Voice is amazing, in so many ways. Example: It automatically transcribes voicemail messages, and sends the transcript to you by email. Also stopped buying bottled water, and have probably saved another $200 in the past year. I just got an Amazon Kindle as a gift. As a book lover, I was skeptical at first, but this thing is amazing--so easy to use, so easy on the eyes. It can hold about 1,500 books, and many classics are available for free or cheap: all of Shakespeare for $.99! Yes, that's 99 cents. It has a built-in dictionary, so any word you encounter that you don't know is instantly defined. Books download in less than a minute, and often in just a few seconds. Wow. Usually I hate technology, but I'm sort of in love. —Firinn

I put up a small bird house just outside my bedroom window, and about ten days ago a male Nuttal's Woodpecker decided it was a good place to sleep every night. So now this beautiful bird is sleeping alongside me every night, about six feet from my head. Sometimes when I wake up in the night I can hear him adjusting position, and settling down again.
